March 7, 2023The United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Antonio Guterres visited Iraq this week to interact with Iraqi government officials, UN agencies, namely UNAMI, UNITAD, UN Country teams and Heads of all Agencies on the current progress of staff stationed in Erbil, Kirkuk, Mosul, Basra, Dohuk and Tehran.
Upon his arrival at the United Nations Integrated Compound in Diwan, the Fiji Guard Unit (FGU) of the 1st Battalion Fiji Infantry Regiment (1 FIR) accorded Mr. Guterres a 50-men guard of honor, which he reviewed before joining all UN staff at the auditorium.
In a statement at a joint news conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’al-Sudani, Mr. Guterres said that his visit to Iraq was focused on building solidarity and confirming the commitment of the United Nations to support Iraq in consolidating its democratic institutions and promoting peace, development, and human rights for all Iraqi citizens.
The FGU Contingent Commander, Lieutenant-Colonel (Lt-Col) Waqanisau, and personnel of the FGU were honored to have had the opportunity to be part of the Secretary General’s recent visit this year.
