In a landmark moment for FijiโPapua New Guinea defence relations, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) was hosted today (August 14, 2025) by the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) on his first official visit to the countryโthe first such visit by any Commander of the RFMF in history.
The dayโs programme commenced with a quarter guard mounted by the PNGDF, setting the tone for a formal and dignified welcome. This was followed by a traditional PNG welcome ceremony, symbolising the strong cultural ties and shared Pacific heritage between the two nations. Rear Admiral Polewara officially received the Commander RFMF at PNGDF Headquarters, where the atmosphere was further enriched by a choir from the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, who performed a selection of hymns in honour of the occasion.
As part of the official engagements, the Commander of the RFMF met with the Papua New Guinea Defence Council, chaired by Minister for Defence Dr. Billy Joseph. The meeting provided a platform to reaffirm bilateral defence cooperation and explore new avenues for strategic engagement in regional security, training, and humanitarian assistance.
The visit continued with a tour of the PNGDF Air Transport Wing, underscoring the operational capabilities and shared logistical priorities of both forces. The Commander then paid tribute to the enduring sacrifices of service members by laying a wreath at the Bomana War Memorialโa solemn act of remembrance for those who fought and died in the defence of freedom.
This historic visit marks a significant step in strengthening FijiโPNG military ties, reinforcing a partnership built on mutual respect, regional solidarity, and a shared commitment to peace and security in the Pacific.
