The Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, His Excellency (H.E.) Peter Roberts, yesterday hosted a double celebration at the Australian Embassy in Tamavua, marking the successful Fiji-Australia Defence Cooperation talks and farewelling the RFMF Women’s Rugby Team as they prepare for their campaign at the Defence Womenโs World Cup in England.
Speaking at the event, H.E. Roberts emphasised the significance of the dayโs dual milestones, noting both occasions as a testament to the strong and enduring relationship between the two nations.
โFirstly, today Australia and Fiji had our Defence Corporation talks, and we are also here to farewell the womenโs rugby team. Two great events that are really worth celebrating together,โ Mr. Roberts said.
โI think itโs really special that youโve been able to go, and I want you to do really, really well in all your games, and best of luck.โ
Representing the RFMF, Deputy Commander Commodore (CDRE) Humphry Tawake underscored rugbyโs special place in Fijian culture, stating that the sport continues to build bridges beyond the field.
โRugby is at the heart of every Fijian. As we discussed with Cathy and other Australian delegates, even in a family where members support different teams, the rivalry never breaks the bond. Similarly, whatever the outcome of the match in the UK in three weeksโ time, it will not weaken our relationship with Australia. Instead, it should make it stronger as we grow from year to year,โ CDRE Tawake said.
CDRE Tawake concluded by emphasising that, โIt is not the size of the Defence Force that matters; it is the size of your heart that counts.โ
Adding to the spirit of regional camaraderie, the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) sponsored the RFMF Womenโs Rugby Team jerseys for their World Cup campaign. This gesture reflects the enduring friendship and mutual support shared among Pacific defence partners, both on and off the field.
The RFMF Womenโs Rugby Team is set to depart Fiji next week to compete in the Defence Womenโs World Cup in England, scheduled from 22 August to 27 September 2025.
