The Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MDVA), in partnership with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), successfully hosted the 2025 iteration of the Fijiโ€“New Zealand Bilateral Defence Talks (BDTs) at the newly established Maritime Essential Services Centre (MESC) in Lami.
Formerly known as the Mutual Assistance Programme (MAP) Talks, the rebranded BDTs reflect not only a change in name but also a deepening of the strategic dialogue between the two nations. Over recent years, the scope and substance of these talks have expanded significantly, encompassing both the civilian and military components of Fijiโ€™s defence sector.
This yearโ€™s BDTs provided a valuable platform for the RFMF and MDVA to engage meaningfully with New Zealand Defence on shared priorities, emerging challenges, and opportunities for enhanced cooperation. The discussions also served to coordinate the upcoming yearโ€™s defence engagements, reinforcing New Zealandโ€™s role as one of Fijiโ€™s key defence partners.
In the lead-up to the talks, the New Zealand delegation visited several RFMF installations to gain a comprehensive understanding of the operational context and the enduring strength of the Fijiโ€“New Zealand defence relationship.
The New Zealand delegation was led by Brigadier Andy Shaw, Assistant Chief Strategic Commitments and Engagements, and included Ms Katie Roche, Director Pacific from the Ministry of Defence International Branch, along with supporting staff comprising two New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) personnel and one representative from the Ministry of Defence.
The 2025 BDTs marked another step forward in the enduring defence partnership between Fiji and New Zealand, underpinned by mutual respect, shared values, and a commitment to regional security and cooperation.
