The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) yesterday conducted the second phase of its Reconciliation and Restoration Program at the Officersโ€™ Mess, Queen Elizabeth Barracks, Nabua, with members of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC).
The gathering marked an important milestone in the ongoing national effort to strengthen unity, rebuild trust, and reaffirm the RFMFโ€™s commitment to democratic governance and partnership with traditional institutions.
Upon the arrival of the GCC delegation, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (CRFMF), Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, presented a whale tooth (tabua) during the traditional ceremony of matanigasau. The matanigasauโ€”one of Fijiโ€™s most solemn traditional ritesโ€”represents an expression of remorse, respect, and request for forgiveness. By offering the tabua, the RFMF publicly acknowledged the institutionโ€™s past actions and sought to open a new chapter founded on accountability, cultural respect, and national solidarity.
The matanigasau was accepted on behalf of the GCC by the Gone Marama na Roko Tui Dreketi, Ro Teimumu Kepa. In her remarks, Ro Teimumu acknowledged that the GCC had long awaited this moment of reconciliation. She noted that the gesture carries profound cultural significance, not only for the chiefly institutions but for the nation at large, as it symbolizes humility, healing, and the restoration of a relationship that has been affected by past political events.
Ro Teimumu emphasised that the acceptance of the matanigasau marks the beginning of a renewed era of cooperation, mutual respect, and shared responsibility between the RFMF and the GCC. She further conveyed the Councilโ€™s blessing upon the RFMF, expressing confidence that its members will continue to uphold the Constitution, respect the rule of law, and safeguard the peace, unity, and well-being of the country.
The second phase of the reconciliation program is expected to continue with broader engagements between the RFMF, traditional leaders, and community representatives, supporting the national objective of fostering long-term stability and strengthening Fijiโ€™s social and cultural foundations.
