The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Naval Division marked a significant milestone yesterday with the official handover and opening of the Maritime Essential Service Centre (MESC) in Lami. The ceremony was officiated by the Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, Honourable Richard Marles.
Upon arrival, Hon. Marles was accorded a 50-man Guard of Honour, followed by a traditional welcoming ceremony before proceeding to the official handover and unveiling of the new facility.
In his address, Hon. Marles underscored the strategic importance of Fijiโs maritime domain, describing it as vital to the nationโs economic prosperity and national security. He said the new MESC represents a significant contribution to Fijiโs maritime capabilities and stands as a symbol of regional partnership.
โFiji is a maritime nation; the maritime domain in Fiji is absolutely essential for Fijiโs economic prosperity and national security. So, the contribution this center represents is so hugely significant,โ Hon Marles said.
โVuvale, meaning Family is exactly the word that captures what the center is about, because the agencies that work here are indeed a family, and this is the opportunity for all the agencies to now operate as one.โ
Hon Marles further emphasised that the Vuvale Partnership reflects the strong and enduring relationship between Fiji, Australia, and the wider Pacific.
โVuvaleโ is also a word that is used to refer to a family, a family that is composed of both Fiji and Australia, and indeed the Pacific. We understand that the security of Fiji is very essential to the security of Australia,โ he said.
โThe Pacific is the neighbourhood in which Australia lives; it is impossible to conceive of Australiaโs security without, in the same breath, acknowledging the need for security in the Pacific region.โ
As part of his visit, Hon Marles also toured the Queen Elizabeth Barracks (QEB) in Nabua and visited the facilities. During the visit, he met with Fijian troops who participated in Exercise Talisman Sabre, conducted in Australia earlier this year.
