Today marked a historic milestone in the defence relations between Fiji and Timor-Leste as the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Major General (Maj-Gen) Jone Kalouniwai joined the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Armed Forces for the National Liberation of East Timor (Portuguese: Forรงas Armadas da Libertaรงรฃo Nacional de Timor-Leste, FALINTIL).
The celebrations commenced with an International Conference where the Chief of Defence of FALINTIL participated in a distinguished panel alongside senior military officers, government ministers, and academics. The discussions reflected on FALINTILโ€™s storied history in the resistance movement while outlining the strategic way forward for Timor-Lesteโ€™s defence and security. The conference underscored the enduring spirit of resilience, sacrifice, and nation-building that continues to define the force.
A highlight of Commander RFMFโ€™s visit was his official call on the Chief of Defence Force of Timor-Leste, Lieutenant-General Domingos Raul โ€˜Falur Rate Laekโ€™. Upon arrival at FALINTIL Headquarters, Commander RFMF was accorded a Guard of Honor โ€” a gesture that demonstrated the highest military courtesy. He inspected the Guard of Honor before engaging in substantive discussions with Lieutenant-General Falur Rate Laek on areas of mutual interest, further strengthening the foundation for defence cooperation between Fiji and Timor-Leste.
The main celebration was a magnificent display of military tradition and national pride. The President of the Republic of Timor-Leste and Supreme Commander of FALINTIL presided over the parade, delivering a stirring address that paid tribute to the sacrifices of past generations. Following the presidential address, the parade marched past with precision drills that showcased the professionalism and discipline of FALINTIL.
The commemoration extended beyond the armed forces as communities from all walks of life participated in a symbolic march-past. Each group represented the diverse segments of Timorese society that suffered and resisted during the long years of oppression, embodying the resilience and unity that secured the nationโ€™s freedom.
Commander RFMFโ€™s presence at this historic occasion was not only a mark of bilateral goodwill but also a profound expression of solidarity. His attendance symbolized Fijiโ€™s recognition of Timor-Lesteโ€™s hard-won independence and the shared history of cooperation forged through peacekeeping and people-to-people connections.
In representing Fiji, Maj-Gen Kalouniwai also carried the collective spirit of Fijians who have contributed to Timor-Lesteโ€™s development, whether as peacekeepers under the United Nations or as civilians supporting reconstruction and capacity-building.
The participation of the Commander RFMF in FALINTILโ€™s golden jubilee celebration reflects the growing strength of Fijiโ€“Timor-Leste defence relations. As both nations continue to face evolving security challenges in the Indo-Pacific, todayโ€™s events reaffirm their commitment to mutual respect, solidarity, and collaboration in pursuit of peace and stability.
