The Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Naval Division celebrated its 50th anniversary today at Albert Park, honoring five decades of maritime service in the country. A medal parade was held to honor five decades of unwavering dedication, sacrifice, and distinguished service today, 24 July, 2025, at Albert Park in Suva.
Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Major-General (Maj-Gen) Ro Jone Logavatu Kalouniwai, addressed sailors, dignitaries, and families during the ceremonial parade, describing the milestone as a βprofound tribute to the vision, sacrifice, and collective effortβ of the Navyβs founding.
βFounded in 1975, the Fiji Navy emerged from the necessity to protect our sovereign waters, secure our national resources, and contribute to regional stability. The establishment of this vital institution was championed by the late then Prime Minister, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, whose foresight laid the groundwork for the establishment of the Navy to become a symbol of national commitment to safeguarding our maritime domain and blue economy.β Maj-Gen Kalouniwai said.
He highlighted growing maritime threats such as climate change and Indo-Pacific geopolitical shifts, urging the Navy to meet them with βinnovation, adaptability, and collaboration.β He acknowledged the support of key partners, including Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and more recently France, Japan, South Korea, China, and India.
Maj-Gen Kalouniwai closed with a reflection on values and service, stating, βAs you equip yourselves with the lessons of the past, I am confident you will be ready to confront the challenges that lie ahead.β
