April 22, 2025The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Commander Land Forces, Brigadier General (Brig-Gen) Onisimo Covunisaqa, officially closed the 1/25 Grade 3 Staff and Tactics Course at the Officers Training School in Vatuwaqa today (17 April, 2025).
In his closing address, Brig-Gen Covunisaqa emphasised the courseโs objective: to prepare officers for command and leadership roles within the RFMF and other military forces at the operational level in joint operations.
โThe desired end state is to eventually enhance your interpretation of the superior and higher commanderโs intent both in war and peacetime in terms of battalion- and brigade-level operations,โ Brig-Gen Covunisaqa said.
Brig-Gen Covunisaqa also underscored the growing use of cyber warfare, precision munitions, and drone technology in modern conflict. He noted the increasing integration of conventional and unconventional tacticsโsuch as the use of proxy forces, information warfare, and irregular operations alongside traditional military strategiesโas significant developments in todayโs security environment.
In conclusion, Brig-Gen Covunisaqa urged participants to strengthen their critical thinking skills. He stated that an officer who thinks critically should be able to conceptualize and develop innovative solutions through intellectual openness and objectivity.
The course participants included officers from various RFMF units, as well as defence partners from the Australian Defence Force and His Majestyโs Armed Forces of Tonga.
